Welcome !

Dear colleagues and friends,

It is my great honour and pleasure to invite you, on behalf of the Congress Organizing Committee, to participate at the 6th Croatian Congress of Laboratory Diagnostics with international participation, to be held in Primosten, Croatia, September 24-27, 2015.

Our profession plays a vital role in the diagnosis, care and treatment of patients, in monitoring, development of new tests and in surveillance of diseases of public health importance. The theme for the 6th Congress: “The Role of BLS in Global Biosecurity and Biosafety˝ is therefore highly relevant and important.

Congress is multidisciplinary, designed as a bridge between scientists and experts of different specialities (BLSs, Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists, Medical Scientists, Clinical Pathologists, Cytologists, Microbiologists, Molecular Biologists, Medical Doctors, Nurses, Researchers, as well as Laboratory Suppliers from all fields of Laboratory Medicine and Technology).

The Congress will be organized in plenary sessions, symposia, oral presentations and poster sections, workshops and coordinated discussions, which will be great opportunity for all participants to exchange information related to scientific research, new ideas and technologies and their implementation in science or everyday diagnostic/clinical practice. We hope that the selected topics and active participation of renowned national and international experts will be sufficient invitation for all participants.

It is our wish to use part of the time for pleasant contacts during the Congress and for sightseeing.

Primosten, a town knitted in “stone lace”, a unique monument to centuries of work field labourers’ callous hands have done, known for its indigenous stone houses, churches, the narrow streets of the Mediterranean style, is situated on a small island which is connected to mainland with a dike. Primosten became a symbol of international meetings and friendship, and a town where everyone is welcome.

Finally, allow me to invite you to our beautiful country, to join us on Congress, to actively participate, meet other colleagues, share your knowledge and experience and create social and professional networks and friendship.

Looking forward to seeing you in Primosten, Croatia!

Primosten

Primosten is a small town built on the island near the coast, known for its indigenous stone houses, churches, the narrow streets of the Mediterranean style, with countless bays and islands.

The stormy history of the place begins in the 7th century B.C. The place with Croatian name Primošten was mentioned in 1564 year, and that name is retained until today. Already then, the island with the settlement was protected by a defensive wall. Sliding wooden bridge was the contact with the mainland, but later, the island was joined by pier, i.e., bridged to the mainland. Therefore, the settlement was named Primošten after the Croatian verb primostiti (to span).

Farming and ranching were the main economic activities in Primošten for a long time. Tourism development started in the mid-twentieth century and Primošten become one of the leading tourist destinations on the Adriatic coast.

Even today, the old single floor houses are witnessing the hard life of Primošten farmers – crooked houses with no windows and often without any room, because only sometimes kitchen and tavern were separated from the rest of the house. At least eight people inhabited such houses. It was an old custom that in the beginning of construction people would put a coin for good luck in the corner of a house or would put the facts about the builder in the bottle.

Today, Primošten is known for its production of olive oil and wine. Primošten vineyards of Babić sort incurred in the “barren land” in stone (Primošten’s lace), and with miles of stone walls, are ode to the human work and persistence. Their picture is exhibited in the headquarters building of the United Nations in New York. Vines in this region are grown from 8th century B.C., when vineyards were planted by Illyrians and Liburnians. Tradition was continued by the Greeks and Romans, and from the 7th century, also by Croats.

Modern Primošten is teeming with vivid shops, small shops and souvenir shops scattered around the narrow cobbled streets, and the summer atmosphere is full of sports and entertainment contents. All of this will satisfy the guests and will provide them unforgettable memories from Primošten.

In any time of the year visitors can enjoy in mild and healthy Mediterranean climate with 2,600 sunshine hours per year and in a pleasant average temperatures, of 7°C in winter and 25°C in summer.
